The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art was designed by the world renowned architect, Mario Botta.
It is the second largest collection of modern art in the United States, and opened in 1995.
A billboard-sized mural by Diogo Rivera was dismantled and reassembled at the SFMOMA while its original home was being seismically retrofitted. The SFMOMA displayed it for free to the public for three years.
The SFMOMA anchors a Museum District including Museum of African Diaspora, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the Contemporary Jewish museum.

The men's restroom is completely red. I'm not kidding about that.
The museum was founded in 1935 with galleries in the Veterans Building at the Civic Center.
In 1945, the museum temporarily moved from its home to accommodate delegates and press for the signing of the United Nations Charter.
