San Francisco General Hospital or simply "The General" to locals


Opened in 1872, it is the city’s only public hospital.


Serves as the only Level One Trauma Center in the city.  This is where Paul Pelosi, husband of Rep. Nancy Pelosi was transported after he was attacked in his home in 2022.


Seen in such film classics as Bullet Dirty Harry, and many episodes of the 1970s TV series, The Streets of San Francisco


in 1983, at the height of the AIDS epidemic, Ward 86 established the standard in care, compassion, and treatment.  This model became the standard for AIDS treatment worldwide.


In 2015 Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan donated $75 million to SFGH.  Today it is know as ZSFG.  The “Z” is for Zuckerberg, but locals and longtime San Franciscans still simply call it the, “General.”
